Improving waste collection

In collaboration with UQ Property and Facilities, UQ SmartCampus is currently developing a smart device capable of improving waste collection. The module that will be deployed to external bins in busier locations throughout campus will measure bin fill level, as well as keep count of times someone uses the bin and of people walking past.

With this information, UQ P&F will know exactly when a bin needs emptying to prevent the servicing of empty bins and contracted staff time physically checking constantly throughout the day. With the SmartBin there will be no more overflowing bins, improving waste management on campus and help make UQ a cleaner and smarter place.

This project is being undertaken by UQ ITEE student Adric Armstrong-Smith under the supervision of Dr Alex Pudmenzky.
